Crown of Thorn Quilt Block Pattern
Crown of Thorns looks more complicated to assemble than it truly is. If you can cut squares and sew quick-pieced half square triangle units, you can make the Crown of Thorns block with ease.
The quilt block finishes at 12" x 12", so none of the units you'll handle are super small, making them easy to work with.

If you think you've seen this quilt block before, but with a different name, you're probably right, because there are loads of traditional quilt blocks with the same basic layout, and with layouts that are very similar (like Jacob's Ladder). This version of Road to California finishes at 12" square. It makes a lovely scrap quilt, so get ready to sort through your stash. And the block is beginner-friendly -- new quilters will be able to make it with ease.

Practical Orchard is a beginner-friendly quilt block. Most of its units are unpieced squares, but a patchwork center gives you the opportunity to practice quick piecing skills. Blocks look good sewn together with sashing between them, or you could go with plain squares. And don't forget about the versatile Snowball quilt block -- it makes a nice alternate block for just about any design, including this 9" square Practical Orchard.
